When should I change professional advisors? (Lawyer, accountant, etc.)

Congratulations! If you’re asking yourself this question, you’re already a step above your competition.

So often the people you needed during growth and survival modes are not the same people to take you to the next level.

The resources you started with often don’t have the expertise to prepare a business for sale [in terms of people or previous experience] navigating the terrain you’re facing.

While relationships matter and are important when you reach this level in your business, the most important piece right now is having professional advisors who understand where you are going.

There isn’t a one-size fits all solution when it comes to your problems an entrepreneur. Enter your email address below so a Gerber team member can make sure you’re getting the appropriate information for your situation.

Entrepreneurs who asked this question also wanted to learn about:

Should I share my business plan with my new accountant, lawyer, or other professional advisors?

Definitely. You should always be sharing your working business plan with your team of advisors. Your advisors should understand where you’re trying to take your business because that will in-turn impact how they dispense the best advice for your situation.

We’re here to help. Enter your email address below to talk with a Gerber team member and help ensure you have all the info you need to make a profitable decision for your business.

Should I have my accountant, lawyer, or other professional advisors on my board?

No. In reality, you don’t want them there.

There’s no reason to have them on your board and sitting in a seat of governance when, in fact, they are paid consultants. That’s what they’re paid to do [you’re exchanging money with advise] and they have subject matter expertise around that.

A lot of the time business owners will think that these people are good board members because that’s what they do for their business, but that isn’t really the case. As a general business, you want people on your board who will understand the growth wave for businesses.

For transparency purposes, you can always pay your professional advisors to attend board meetings. The upside here is to ensure you are all on the same page, not letting details of your business get lost in translation. But all-in-all, you don’t need them on the board.
